Thank you for your interest in an internship with GERA!

Our Internship program is a stepping stone to meaningful study and work in fields such as education, humanitarian affairs, international development, social work, and bilingual education, and is open to applicants 18 years of age and older. Through this internship, you will gain invaluable firsthand experience in providing educational and enrichment services to refugee families, alongside our knowledgeable and committed staff.

We require a semester-long commitment, and estimate that interns will spend 5-10 hours per week on activities related to the internship. Internships are unpaid. A letter of completion will be issued by GERA to interns who meet all internship requirements.

Currently we offer internships in the following programs:

  • ESL program
  • Children’s Enrichment program
  • Arabic translation (Language interns will be placed in ESL or Enrichment programs, so please review related program descriptions below)

Schedule

ESL and Enrichment sessions are concurrent and run on the following schedule at a location in Wayne, NJ:

◦ Wednesday evenings from 6:30 pm – 8:30pm

◦ Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm 

ESL Interns
GERA staff will provide a detailed orientation for interns who will tutor ESL participants in one-one, small group, and large group formats. All training, materials, and ongoing mentoring will be provided by GERA’s education team. Interns must attend every session, tutor ESL learners, and assist GERA’s team with room set up, clean up, and other tasks. Students of Bilingual Education, Adult Education, Humanitarian Assistance, International Relations, and Public Policy, among other disciplines will find this internship relevant to their area of study. Knowledge of Arabic is a plus.

Enrichment Interns
Concurrent to the ESL sessions, GERA runs a homework help, tutoring, and enrichment session for children of adult ESL learners. All training and materials are provided by GERA’s education team. Interns must attend every session, tutor children, help with homework, engage them in indoor and outdoor activities, and be responsible for their safety. Students of Education, After-School Education, Humanitarian Assistance, and other related areas will find this internship relevant to their area of study. Knowledge of Arabic is a plus.
